The adidas brief - Gary Aspden’s selection

The brand expert, Spezial head honcho and adidas consultant picked his favourite projects submitted for the Photography: Mastered campaign brief.

The relationship between adidas and high fashion is long and storied, and the German brand is among the world’s most iconic.

Gary wanted the photographers to create work inspired by the adidas visual philosophy, and to include adidas footwear in their imagery, either the Samba or Gazelle. They were given the choice to consider the shoe’s original purpose (football or training), or the shoe’s cultural reference points to inspire their imagery.

Ultimately though, the priority was strong imagery. Gary kept the brief as broad as possible, while still anchoring it in two of adidas’s most iconic styles, and therefore a very traditional take on the adidas aesthetic to guide the photographers while giving them the freedom to really explore.
